ABC WHOVIANS Announcment

Hello Whovians,

I am writing to apologise for my absence of late and for the ongoing issues members are having with the site- including difficulties signing into the site, posting and seeing whether there is new content in the forums. Unfortunately after years of trying to have these and other issues addressed by the website builder provider (webs.com) I have given up any hope that they will ever be able to provide the level of service that I expected when I first signed up with them in 2012. They have been slow in fixing some problems and have failed to fix at all many others.

As a result I have decided not to renew my website subscription when it comes due on the 17th August 2020.

Please note that this still well over a year away, and it does not mean that the website will cease to exist- The forums will remain in place and work essentially the same as they do now (which isn't that great!) The only real difference will be the website address which will change to abcwhovians.webs.com and the appearance of the site will change as well as I currently use a premium template- which will not be available to use when the site reverts to a free website.

I did think long and hard about transferring ownership of the page to somebody new, and I do thank those who offered, but I am of the opinion that the problems with the site are the result of the poorly managed Webs.com and not because of the amount of time I am able to dedicate to it.

What now?

I don't have time to explore other options for starting a new site using a different platform, but would encourage anyone who is interested in doing so, to investigate it, and feel free to advertise any such new site here on ABC Whovians.

I apologise for all the problems and thank you all for your patience and support over the years (ABC Whovians will have been running for 7 years in just over a week, can you believe?).

As a final word, a couple of you have enquired about me, and while the ongoing drought and low milk prices have taken some toll on me, as well as a minor health issue, I am otherwise ok. Part of my decision to pull away from the site has to do with these things, but I also cant ignore the fact that the site hasn't been giving me the joy it once did. Its no secret that my views on Doctor Who are not in alignment with the views of the majority here, and while a forum certainly encourages a wide range of opinions, I can't hide the fact that as a contributor I have not enjoyed being part of the community as much lately, and have accordingly spent less time contributing. I say that, not as a major reason for winding down the site- which has more to do with the issues I have had with Webs.com, but as an explanation as to why I haven't been contributing as much in the forums.

I thank you again for giving me such an awesome hobby over the last 7 years, and I apologise again for the upcoming winding down of the site. Good luck to anyone who might pursue a new platform to keep this community together, but in the absence of any new site, remember this site will remain here for at least the next 17 months, and beyond using the address http://abcwhovians.webs.com along with all it's frustrating issues you've all come to know and love over the last 7 years.

Cheers,

Joe (SM)

EDIT: Many thanks to Rumpole who has started an alternative forum at https://ozziewho.wixsite.com/ozwhovians . Please go and check it out and sign up!

Hi SM,

Thank you for all the hard work and companionship that you have invested in this site over the years.

The current drought is just awful for your occupation and of course that is a big worry. The rest of us can't imagine how it's affecting yourself and your family and we can only hope it's over soon. Let's remember that Dr Who is just a tv show, as loved as it is and there are much more important things in life, including a rapport with others on all sorts of subjects important to us.

The lack of support from Webs.com is disappointing and frustrating for us all and has been the major factor in a lack of response from members. In order to try and keep a community going, I have started a site at

https://ozziewho.wixsite.com/ozwhovians

I'm keeping it very simple at the moment to see what the user response is like and whether it works well from a technical point of view. It's free to me at the moment and I'll see how the response is before I consider going to a paid site.

I'm sorry if some opinions of the new Who distress you. From what I've read the views seems reasonably evenly split. The fact that the show is going into hiatus for a year does not encourage much discussion on this or other Who sites and may be indicative of a change of direction for the show when it returns at which point opinions may change.

In the meantime, all the best to you and your family, and long may it RAIN.

regards,
Rumpole

SM.

Gusset sends her regards to you and your family. Apparently she can still not log in to do so herself.
