While it was a huge improvement when first enacted nearly 20 years ago, current federal environmental legislation is now out-of-date and it has never halted biodiversity decline. Let's hope that whoever is in government after the next federal election is able to put together and pass legislation that is more effective in protecting the natural environment, especially our native biodiversity. It is encouraging to see the Labor Party promising that they will listen to the scientific experts to achieve this, if they win office. The experts have been ignored by successive governments for a long time at both national and state levels.

Good to see someone taking the environment seriously.

Let's hope they still do after the election.

They seem to be old fashioned chauvinists. Women should be kept in their place.

She's right though. It's been a wasted year politically, even a wasted 5 years that the Libs have been in and they have achieved virtually zero.

Useless lot.

Yes, I agree. It was a totally enjoyable read, though.

Yes, huge mistake to withdraw from Syria and Afghanistan. This is going to bring the Republicans and the Democrats together against Trump.

Speaking of Fireworks.

Am I getting old & jaded?
Or does one Sydney new years fireworks display look & sound much like the previous year's controlled explotion?

I don't feel any "woy factor" these days.
Anyone agree with me?  :|

Yes, I totally agree with you Photon.

Hate to be a wet blanket, but New Years's Eve fireworks and laser displays around the country do a lot of environmental damage.  Apart from the obvious smoke pollution, big fireworks displays can cause bird species to desert their nests and pregnant flying-foxes to abort their unborn young. Occasionally, they can cause bushfires  Governments (federal, state and local) turn a blind eye to these impacts each year.

There is probably a better way of celebrating than fireworks.
