What a mishmash of panellists we have tonight (19-03-2012)

Germaine Greer. Why do they keep rolling her out ? Does she have anything more to contribute in 'modern' times ? She doesn't live here and only seems to blow in for special occassions, so can she contribute to a discussion of the Australian scene ?

Toby Ralph Toby Ralph is a marketing strategist whose clients include tobacco companies, the nuclear waste industry, live meat exports, Murray Basin irrigators and banks. He worked on 40 elections around the world, including all of John Howard’s election campaigns, but says he’s more interested in business than politics.

Speaking to The Power Index, Ralph confided: "I'll work for anyone who pays me. I'm a taxi: flag me down and I'll take you wherever you want to go... I like working for things where people's first reaction is to say: 'that's wrong'.

So he's a gun for hire for the establishment.  Next

Benjamin Law Benjamin Law is a Brisbane-based freelance writer, who was once described by Andrew Bolt as "a gay with comprehension issues".

So what ?

Christa Hughes Christa Hughes is a cabaret and blues singer, daughter of well know jazz musician Dick Hughes.

Wow

Craig Gross Craig Gross is an author, speaker and pastor. He shot to prominence in 2002 when he founded XXXchurch.com, a website dedicated to telling people the truth about pornography, in order to help those addicted to porn as well as those who made their living in the porn industry.

Fascinating.

Maybe I'm getting cynical but it seems to me that Q&A is getting more into the area of provoking disputes about minor issues rather than getting important issues discussed. This show looks as though its going to ba a catfight between Greer and Law (representing freedom of speech and civil liberties) and Cross and Ralph (representing the establishment) with Hughes throwing in a few smart alec comments from the sidelines.

Good for a light watch with a bit of popcorn, but not much else.

I'm just so grateful that there are no pollies tonight, rumps.   And I love dear old Germaine - who cares where she lives?   She had to escape in the 50s like other Aussies - sometimes it's hard living in a country with no intellectual tradition.

Germaine is one of my favourites too!   She's one of the people who is on my "who would you invite to dinner" list ....... interesting, straightforward and fearless.

Hence my original point. They do it to create a stoush. The Bible bashing yank is pretty irrelevant to us, so I don't see why he's on at all. If he wasn't on the panel there would be no need for Germaine either.

You have a point Rumpole; but I would defend Germaine with my last breath.

Depends on how you define 'intellect'.  If it only applies to those we agree with, then that narrows the field somewhat I guess. [8)]  She was a woman of the times, and these ain't them. I'm well and truly over her.

The whole panel looks positively eyeglazing to me. []

The whole show is getting more and more like fairy floss.  Very pink. Very sugary on do- gooder subjects and very sticky for anyone who Tony Jones chooses not to.pander and grovel to.

Gee, appears I'm not a fan of Q&A doesn't it?:/:lol:

It's a strange attitude these opinionated elders have, which would deny space for elders to have opinions. I've noticed no decline in GG's mental faculties. In fact she's an absoluite champion of the new and relevant.

Some of us think that she has just been brought in to argue with the preacher about pornography, which has been around for centuries, so I don't see what is either new or relevant about that.

But whatever, as trouper said there ain't no politicians, so that's something.

I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the"Anti-Porn Bible Bashing Yank" Craig Gross is not one of those traditional fire & brimstone hypocrites that lead most US churches. :|

As for Germaine Greer, the old dear is still sharp as a tack.        Loved her comments about Julia Gillard's jackets.

What a waste of space putting that Christa person on in an otherwise intellectual discussion.

Germaine Greer? Harmless & entertaining. But what the heck are sensible people [?] such as yourselves watching Q&A for in the first place? I have never been able to get past a couple of minutes of it ever. Always came across as rigged, contrived, shallow & pointless no matter who was on.

Anywho, if it matters, I would suggest that good ol' Germaine is as relevant now as ever. First, the feminist issues she trumpeted decades ago will always require attention lest they be bargained away like a Work Choice. Second, her ex-pat visitations are a constant reminder that despite the new century, Australia remains the place to escape from.

So why did you come back ?

Re Q&A in general. It is shallow because it's a multi subject show, so you don't get the time to go into any one subject in depth, and the standard of questions asked are patchy, and seem to revolve around the personality of politicians .

The quality of the panellists is patchy too. I thought the spin doctor could have been willing to give some more detail on how the spin cycle worked if he was asked the right questions.

All in all, the show is a brave effort but could be improved.

I couldn't give a Friar's freckle who comes and goes - as long as they make a contribution while they are here and tidy up before they go!

Q&A was a treat last night!    Do come again!

Jeez Rumps why did I come back? You misinterpret my post - I would refer you to what Trouper had to say way up the top. Needless to say my return had nothing at all to do with a quest for intellectual tradition. There was a great deal of sentiment involved initially but I am so over that now. Gimmee an unrealistically very  high  $AU & outrageous rural home prices & I might yet give the Pacific North West a burl.

I'm not convinced that there is any great effort involved in Q&A - brave or otherwise. But I'll attempt a full sitting some time...

Earle I'd watch last nights on IView, it's about as good as it gets. Rumpole was unlucky prebagging it because the show hasn't been working well for some time. But when it does work I could listen for hours.

The main topic discussed was sex education. It's one I wouldn't mind continuing. For once I thought the preacher man had a point re: sex education and the home. Which is ironic beause I suspect that it was the church that drove sex education out of the home and buried it deep in the garden. As I recall he said "not just a conversation but a lot of conversations". And I don't think he was against it being taught in school, I'm not.

But I wonder if we have got it all wrong? Well, speaking for myself and I think, (perhaps erroneously) I speak for the majority; we leave it late. We leave it 'until they're old enough to understand', by which time the topic has become embarrassing for kids to talk about with parents. Maybe they're always old enough to understand? Maybe we should be more relaxed about the whole thing?

------------------------

Only up to a point. Pornography includes child pornography, and we should definitely not be relaxed about that.

Unfortunately ther was a descent into puerility last night with the "bring the pussy back into porn" remark, but I agree with the general premise that porn shouid be talked about in sex classes to demistify it and generally take out the "forbidden fruit" aspect that attracts young people to it.

It's always seen as a male precinct, maybe some ladies could comment as to whether it has any attraction to them.

Well I enjoyed her - thought she added a bit of colour.

Of course she wasn't the most "intellectual" there - great perfermer though...
